Why is there an art show at Na?
Aug. 14 2007That’s a question we’ve heard a lot and one that we think it may be on people’s minds.
Consider the art show as a physical, visual application of humble orthodoxy. New Attitude teaches humble orthodoxy through the conference. The art show displays how a group of artists in seeking to live out humble orthodoxy, chose to create art in response to a specific passage of Scripture.
To use our working definition of humble orthodoxy, you could think of creating art being affected by it in this way:
Believe Truth.
Art demands that the artist deeply consider truth as he seeks to present it in a way that can hopefully helps others see truth in a fresh way.
Live Truth.
Wrestling with truth and with the process of creating art helps us grow in sanctification and walk out our faith.
Represent Truth.
Though our portrayals of truth and beauty don’t do justice to the truth and beauty being represented, we desire our small efforts to be a representation of Christ to the world around us.
Now we’re not saying that all good art has to be about scripture. We think that humble orthodoxy impacts the creative process involved in making all kinds of art (painting, design, poetry, theatre) addressing all kinds of subject matter (literary, beauty) and including a range of expressions (representational, abstraction, narrative, symbolic).
But since at the conference the focus is teaching, we have chosen to present an art show that complements the teaching aspect by responding directly to scripture or doctrine.
