Dead guys rock!… Wow THAT came out wrong!  Here are a few I benefit from (most of them have become dear friends during the study on Romans):
- John Owen (major props to his treaties “Overcoming Sin & Temptation” - a MUST!)
- C.H. Spurgeon (namely “The Treasury of David”, “Morning and Evening”, and his sermon on Proverbs 4:13)
- John Calvin (his commentaries on Romans and Psalms)
- Martin Luther (his comments that pop up every now and then in Romans.  I love his heart in this quote in referring to Paul’s anguish in Romans 9, “It seems incredible that a man would desire to be damned, in order that the damned might be saved.")

- Matthew Henry (his helpful insight during Psalms and some theological practicalities throughout Proverbs)

Leonard Ravenhill was a firey Wesleyan/Holiness preacher that pled with God for revival.  He was so passionate for holiness.  An incredible man of prayer.  May be most famous for his one-liners.  (Abraham, if I am wrong on any of this please correct me) I would disagree theologically with Ravenhill on several points, but would’ve sat to learn at his feet any day.

Leonard Ravenhill was a man on fire. He was a revivalist and a man of prayer. His sermons still bring tears to my eyes when I hear them (though I’ve heard them so many times over). He is famous for his oneliners. He was often radical. Yes, if you want to beat mediocrity you have to be radical. A.W.Tozer spoke of him thus “Toward Leonard Ravenhill it is impossible to be neutral. His acquaintances are divided pretty neatly into two classes, those who love him out of all proportion and those who hate him with perfect hatred. And what is true of the man is sure to be true of his books, of this book. The reader will either close its pages to seek a place of prayer or he will toss it away in anger, his heart closed to its warnings and appeals.” (taken from the foreword to LR’s book Why Revival Tarries). I love him and he has fuelled my passion for Christ.
